As per scripture, it is said that Lord Brahma mediated at this lake in this region. Hence it got named Brahmatal lake and thus the trek.
The Brahmatal trek has everything you need on a great Himalayan trek. It has magnificent mountain views of Nanda Ghunti, Nandakot, Trishul, Maiktoli Chaukhamba, Nellkanth and the other big mountains from the other side and they all look very close so it’s a very grand view, snow-filled trails, an abundance of Rhododendron, and the adventure of undertaking a winter trek. Hence it is a very unique trek. So if you haven't done a winter trek, this is definitely the right one you start with this coming winter season.
Brahmatal Trek has a frozen alpine lake at the base of the Brahmatal top. It is like a ridge, which gives the maximum views of all the Himalayas mountains.
Apart from that, you can see the Roopkund trek trail in the Brahmatal Trek itself. The maximum climb on the Brahmatal Summit is 12,500 ft. There is a gradual ascend from 8000 ft to 12000 ft over 4 days of the trek. Plus, the path leading to Brahmatal through the forests is covered in snow. So be ready to glaze in snow, and experience extreme weather on the Brahmatal top and summit. It is a 6-day trek and the base camp is at Lohajung.
The best part of the Brahmatal trek is it's open even in peak winters when the remaining winter treks like Kedarkhanta.

Day 1
Rishikesh/Kathgodam to Lohajung
Drive Distance: 226 km | Duration: 10- 11 hours drive from Rishikesh | Altitude: 7,600 ft. The pickup point and time is near the railway station at 6.00 am. Trekkers must be ready at the spot at the stipulated time. It is a 9-10 hours drive to Lohajung. It will be an overnight stay at Lohajung. Food and stay shall be provided. A brief meeting to know the team lead and fellow trekkers.
Day 2
Lohajung to Bekaltal
In the Morning wake up to scenic views of beautiful Lohajung. Post breakfast, depart for Bekaltal. It will be a trek through forest trails and enchanting views and the environment. Lunch and dinner at the campsite. Enjoy the day end at Bekaltal, climatic acclimatization, and soak in nature.
Day 3
Bekaltal to Brahmatal Camp site
Early morning, post breakfast, depart from Bekaltal. The total trek distance is 8 km. Witness beautiful views through forests, trees of Oak and Rhododendrons, and small meadows. By afternoon will reach the Brahmatal campsite. Lunch, dinner, and rest at camp tents.
Day 4
Brahmatal to Brahmatal top and Daldam
Next day leave post breakfast from Brahmatal top. View astonishing Himalayan mountain peaks like Mt. Nanda Ghunti, Mt. Trishul, Mt. Nilgiri, and Mt. Neelkanth across the lusciously spread Himalayan region. The climb is slightly difficult as the climb is steep. During snow, it is difficult to walk unless one uses spikes. Enjoy the neverending views of mountains touching the skies and immerse in the natural ambience. After Brahmatal Top, trek to Daldam campsite and rest for the night.
Day 5
Daldam to Lohajung
The next morning have breakfast and depart to Lohajung from Daldam trek. It is a 3.7 km trek and shall take 3-3.5 hours. Arrive at Lohajung in the afternoon. Overnight stay in Lohajung. Trekkers can explore nearby local places (cost not included).
Day 6
Lohajung to Kathgodam/Rishikesh
End of Bramhatal trek. Departure from Lohajung to Kathgodam/Dehradun 230 km drive back to Dehradun via the Holy places of Karnaprayag, Rudraprayag, and Devprayag in Uttarakhand. It will be a 10-hour journey and by evening or night, 8 pm will reach Kathgodam/Dehradun.
Basecamp
The main junction to start the base camp (Lohajung) is Dehradun. To reach Dehradun, one can either travel by train, bus, or flight. It has connectivity from major places and cities.
Another junction for Lohajung is Kathgodam, which is connected by all three modes of transport (train, road, and air). There is Kathgodam railway station and it has a good frequency of trains from Delhi, Lucknow, and major places of Uttarakhand. Private buses, cabs, and government-run buses are also available. The nearest airport is Pantnagar airport.
Always start one day before day 1 of the trek which is picked up early in the morning from Dehradun/Rishikesh/Kathgodam.
Things To Pack
Following are the things one needs to pack for Brahmatal Trek:
Trekking shoes with good support, a 50-60 liters strong and durable backpack, warm clothes, padded jackets, fleece jackets (for winters/autumn), inner thermal wear (for winters), woolen caps, collared shirts, track pants (easily dry ones), sunglasses, socks, trekking stick, basic toiletries, water bottle, extra plastic bags to carry worn clothes, any other item as per personal preference.
Trekking light is highly recommended, as backpacks have to be carried by trekkers themselves. It saves from fatigue and body aches.
Mandatory Id proof like Address and identity to be carried to take required trek permits.

The Brahmatal trek comes under easy to moderate levels of the trek. It is situated at 12,500 ft and in winter, it has a carpet of snow. Walking gets slightly difficult in the snow. Plus for the trek, a basic level of fitness is required, considering it is a 6-day trek. It is preferred to walk or jog daily to improve fitness levels and warm up the feet and calves. This will help you during your trek and give you a comfortable and enjoyable trek. The first two days will be vehicle travel to and fro basecamp at Lohajung and the actual trek will be done in 4 days. It will cover approximately 22-23 km and on average 7 km every day. Overall, it is not a difficult trek, but if done during peak winters, one has to be physically fit to endure knee-length snow and climatic conditions.
The major attractions like snowy trails and snow-clad mountain views are best in December end of January, February and March. In April also this trek can be done, you can see the Brahmatal in its greens when the snow is melting. It flowers with winter flowers, a green canopy of trees, and sunlight beaming through them. But, summers can get hot and not so enjoyable. During rain, the trek is closed.

Yes, it is safe to trek Brahmatal in December, January, February, and March also.
The best route from Delhi is to travel via flight, train or roadways to Dehradun. Other places like Haridwar and Rishikesh. But the closest and best are Dehradun and Kathgodam.
